Massage Therapy Week 3-9 September 2012

MTW MEDIA RELEASE

Massage Therapy Week is held annually

Introduction to Visceral Massage, heavily weighted hands on class, looking at the fascial architecture of the abdomen and studying palpatory fluency. Learning the art of precision finding, palpating and assessing the various soft tissues and fascial structures of the abdomen.

Palpation and Assessment of the Abdominal Viscera -
The first portion of the 3-day programme will examine and palpate the abdominal viscera in a layer by layer approach beginning with the abdominal wall and working deep. Intraperitoneal and retroperitoneal organs and their respective fascial architecture will be palpated and assessed from skin to spine. Learn to palpate, differentiate, and assess hollow and solid organs, visceral ligaments, and the suspensory architecture that wrap and support organs, blood vessels, lymphatics, and nerves. You will marvel at how the abdominal cavity is put together, and your burgeoning skill sets with assessing structure and functionality here. Good palpation precedes effective treatment.

Clinical Applications
The second portion of the programme will build upon the palpation and assessment skills learned in the first portion and apply manual therapy treatments to actual clinical conditions.

Clinical Applications to Acid Reflux / GERD
Heartburn / acid reflux / GERD are all names for one of the most common digestive system complaints worldwide! Learn the anatomy and physiology of the upper abdomen, change the position of the stomach relative to the diaphragm, and relax smooth muscle holding patterns in the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. Work in a layer by layer approach to mobilize these structures, decrease smooth muscle contracture along the entire GI tract, and optimize function for this important area of the body.

Treating Low Back and Pelvis Pain via the Abdomen
Low back pain is one of the top 3 reasons for initiating an MD visit in North America. This class is a comprehensive 360 degree look at this area of the body including the anterior spine and pelvic floor architecture. Assess and treat holding patterns and contracture in skeletal and smooth muscle. Change posture and gait patterns by addressing the abdominal viscera and pelvic floor attachments in a layer by layer approach. Put a whole new set of low back and pelvis pain tools into your tool kit!

Clinical Applications to Dysmenorrhea and Pelvic Organ Prolapse
Dysmenorrhea and pelvic organ prolapse are two of the most common challenges in women’s health care. Learn manual therapy interventions in a layer by layer approach so your clients can enjoy their bellies and their lives! Increase confidence with languaging about this work as well as palpating, assessing, and treating the pelvic organs and related connective tissue structures. You will learn manual interventions to lift and mobilise abdominal and pelvic organs, tonify visceral ligaments related to the uterus and ovaries, and change tonus of skeletal muscle related to these conditions.
